The Anchor & Palette Gallery, a family-owned business for over 40 years, is the source of Dick LaBonte’s paintings and prints. Using a neo-primitive style, artist Dick LaBonte (1921-2011) focused on nostalgic paintings of the New Jersey Shore, basing his imaginary paintings on historical photos of Bay Head, where he lived, as well as Sea Girt, Spring Lake, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach, Mantoloking and more.
Actually, Dick LaBonte’s best-known painting is not a seashore scene but a fantasy entitled, “Cocktails at the White House”. Depicting a gathering of all the Presidents and First Ladies, it was painted in 1984, but as each new President took office, LaBonte would add them to his original painting. The print is in its fifth edition, with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama included.
Copies of LaBonte’s book, “Dick LaBonte: Paintings of the Jersey Shore and More”, published by Jersey Shore Publications is available at the Jolly Tar. This wonderful coffee table book includes over 160 images of paintings by Dick LaBonte, with comments about each painting written by the artist.
Anne LaBonte Neff, daughter of artist Dick LaBonte, currently owns and manages the business. The gallery is located at 56 Bridge Avenue, inside the Jolly Tar gift shop. Prints by Dick LaBonte are available for sale there, along with artwork by Paula Kolojeski, Ann Hayes, Janice Collinson and more.
