Pilates is a system of precise, controlled movement developed over 100 years ago that increases strength, flexibility, and balance. It has been used in the rehabilitation and training of dancers, athletes, and non-athletes alike. Like yoga, it is a mind-body exercise, requiring the practitioner to focus on the breath and the quality, not quantity, of movements. (“Reformer” is the name of a piece of equipment often used in Pilates exercise; the same principles apply whether using the reformer, a mat, or other Pilates equipment.)
